For long ago when all King Midas touched turned to solid gold, he had but one friend, a special goose who was merely gilded by his touch. She was the Great Grand Granny Goose of nursery rhyme legend and she was only gilded and not made solid gold for her blood was made of brine, preserving her and giving her the power to lay pickled eggs; eggs that were said to be the tastiest of ever to be pickled. She spent her life, long after Midas had died, telling stories to children and serving pickled eggs until one day she passed into another plain of existence. Before she left she lay one last nest of the most glorious pickled eggs and promised one day they would hatch when the world was ready. Then she flew into a golden sunset and the Gilded Goose Guild has taken care of her eggs ever since, spreading joy and pickled eggs in her memory and making the world into the kind of place a gaggle of gilded goslings may grow into glory.
